Learning to Fly: Unique Workshop Helps Participants Soar

The Rutgers Women in Flight program uses aviation to help women working in science, technology, engineering and mathematics become stronger, more effective leaders in their fields. The program uses flight-related terminology, such as thrust and drag, as metaphors for different situations in their work environments. Participants learn how to use the metaphors to maximize results in their careers and personal lives. Throughout the two-day event, participants learn how to fly a small aircraft with the leadership of a professional flight facilitator who instructs them during the flight. Each person receives a picture of herself seated as the pilot in command as a reminder of her accomplishment.
