Hi, my name is Josh Kallenberg and I’m here at the Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles, California. I’ve been flying professionally for about 13 years, and now I have the pleasure of flying this Gulfstream G450 which is a lot of fun and exciting. And today I’m going to talk to you about becoming a pilot. How would you start learning how to fly? Well, there’s a few things you have to consider first. While you can take lessons at any age, the minimum age to solo an aircraft is 16 years old. And after that to actually get your private pilot certification, which is your first license you’ll most likely get, will be 17 years old. And if you want to continue down the path to become a professional aviator 18 years old would be required for your commercial certification. And eventually you need to be 23 years old to get your airline transport pilot certification. So if you’re actually thinking about becoming a pilot whether doing it as a hobby, or as a career, you have several options. If you want to do it for a hobby, you can go ahead and get your recreational license or your sport pilot certification. They have less restrictions and require less time and money to get. However, if you think you might want to advance, even as a hobby advance in your rating and training, or if you want to continue for a career, you want to get at least your private pilot certification. One thing you need to consider when starting is getting a medical certification. And depending on how far you want to go along in your training will depend on the level of certification that you need.
