AUSSIE ASSAULT SHIP! HMAS Canberra – Australia’s new Light Aircraft Carrier/Landing Helicopter Dock.
This video features the Royal Australian Navy’s new Canberra class Amphibious Assault Ship – HMAS Canberra is the lead ship of two.
At 231 meters and 27,000 metric tons these Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) ships are the largest ever built for the Royal Australian Navy.
And by all reports these vessels are among the most capable and sophisticated air-land-sea amphibious deployment systems in the world – the footage demonstrates their interoperability as they function seamlessly with U.S. Navy hovercrafts (LCACs) and V-22 Ospreys.
They have a carrying capacity for 18 helicopters (with 6 operating simultaneously from the flight deck), 4 x LCM-1E landing craft, 110 vehicles and 12 Abrams tanks. (It is speculated that these ships will eventually be configured to operate F-35Bs.)
